Hmmm...most of the dates look pretty old...Is anybody out there? Guess I'm a little late to Myst games, but am having fun anyway.
I've been thru real MYST & Riven and am not yet bald, (but am a little twitchy).
I'm working on Myst III: Exile and URU: Complete Chronicles. Get stuck on one, go to the other...
I'm in Gahreesen, my first age out of Relto, and have happened upon two Linking Stones, both of which have taken me to places which seem to have no escape short of going back to Relto. One in particular: A small Balcony overlooking a town, with a high wall behind, no jumping over the railing, nothing to play around with, zilch.
I understand there are the possiblilty of anomialies due to the evolution of URU from an online game, as well as problems intigrating the expansion packs into the Complete Chronicles along with the Prime Ages (maybe?) Could the stones be taking me somewhere I shouldn't be, at least yet? blink.gif
Or...most likely, what silly little thing am I overlooking?
And, just how do the purposes of the two linking devices differ?
Thanks to any and all who are still Myst junkies and care to reply...

This is both simple and very complicated to explain.

First, you will come across many linking stones that take you "nowhere". There is one in particular you haven't found that takes you to a place in Teledahn (an age you haven't gone to yet it seems) that serves no purpose. confused1.gif Maybe Cyan had something planned for later, but we'll never know.

Second, the linking stone that takes you to a balcony is not entirely useless. In fact, it has two very distinct uses. One, which I won't spoil, has to do with when you start playing the expansion packs. The other use is very apparent if you play Untěl Uru. You can watch people and events from the balconies. But in the offline single player game that use is pretty much null and void.

Now for the complicated part, I will do my best to not use spoilers.

D'ni linking books are written very carefully and very precisely. It is an art and a science that requires a lot of effort on the part of the writer. Also, very specific rules have to be followed.
The linking stones though... they don't have any paper, any writing. Perhaps, then, the D'ni did not create them, per se.

I would look around for journals strewn about the Ages. Some of them give you valuable insight. Although the D'ni Restoration Council did not know what the linking stones were, some of them had guesses. By the end of the game, you will have drawn your own conclusions.

Have fun, and if you need anymore help, we are a very friendly group of people. And Welcome to the Guild of Greeters! rock.gif Come back often!

Okay okay, technically speaking yes, Terf's simple answer is correct ( Hi Terf bleh.gif). I was trying to explain everything though, which is way too much naturally.

And yes, here on this site are lots of Myst junkies who really do care about Myst and other players. That's why most of us play Untěl Uru, so we can experience Myst together.

Thank You both! Exactly the sort of reply I was hoping for.
I will have to do a little research on Until Uru. Is this "online gaming"?
The name? Lets just say my mate helped me out on that...

"So . . . when can we expect you to visit the cavern, Mr. Oxymoron?"

Briefly: consider those balconies simply as teasers: they show that there are places you can discover later. On the other hand, a tip: after using a linking stone browse the books found in your bookshelf.
