Never had this problem before but I'm sure there's someone who has. I have Windows XP and I'm sure it's what I had when I last played it but I can't remember that far back. Installation was perfect for the typicall install but once I click the icon it pulls up a box asking to start with Direct 3D or Software. The Direct 3D just flashes the screen real quick and then nothing, but the Software makes the screen go black for a second then nothing. Is there something I need to download for video capability? (I have DirectX 9.0)

Hmm, if you've played the game on your system before and this is only happening now, something has changed. Have you gotten a new video card? Upgraded drivers? I have both the CD and DVD versions of the game and haven't had any problems with them (I've even played the one from Gametap).

My first suggestion would be to uninstall the game and try again, maybe with a Full Installation and see if that helps. If not, we'll need more information, such as what video card you have, versions of software, that sort of thing. Hope you get this fixed though!

Welcome to the GoG forums Sujoblue bye2.gif

Have you tried to run the game in a compatibility mode?
If you don't know how that is done, just right-click on the Myst III icon, and select Poperties. Next select the Compatibility tab, check the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select a compatibility mode (usally Windows 95 or Windows 98/ME mode will work).

I had this identical problem. What I found was that Myst 3 when started needs to adjust your video settings to suit the game software (this is common in a number of games). With Myst 3, on my PC, we found that it was not able to change the settings for the game. What we found was that I had NetMeeting Desktop sharing running as a background program in my desktop shortcuts (lower right icons on the task bar). NetMeeting had been set up to lock the video settings so that the remote desktop would be compatible with my desktop.

So, when I started Myst 3 I got this error that said that 1. It couldn't start with the Direct 3D Hardware Rendering, try Software Rendering. 2. Then it said "Unable to run Myst 3 - your video settings cannot meet the game specs "(SIC).

Solution for me was to right click the NetMeeting icon (in taskbar, lower right) and choose EXIT to turn it off, then the game ran fine.

If you are not using NetMeeting, perhaps you have some other program like "Go to My PC" running in the background?

I hope this may help you. Good luck!

I dont have new meeting settings that disable visuals so thats out. I tried the compatability modes and tried the Direct 3D and software for each mode but still same thing. I don't know how to check my video card. I've always used windows XP and never had a problem with this system but I got a new comp recently... An HP and it came with the HP setting of course but down the line it became corrupted so I switched it to Windows XP. Maybe its the type of comp? idk..... If you need more info on what I have tell me how to find it and I'll let you know. I'm a one of a kind noobie to things like this. Never knew about compatability modes. Very interesting!

Your computer specs and video card information can be found with DirectX Diagnostic tool. To use it, go to START -> Run -> dxdiag. A window will pop up and soon will have lots of information sorted in tabs.

Compatibility modes are amazing smile.gif. I never would have gotten through Myst and Riven on my XP system without them.

Don't worry about being a "noobie"! Everyone starts out that way, or they wouldn't be here asking for help. That's why we're here after all smile.gif.

Hello and welcome Sujoblue.

Yes the computer specs would help alot. Follow Kens directions above to bring up the DirectX diagnostic tool. Once that is open. at the bottom will be a 'save all information' button. You want to press that and it will save all the info as a text file, just tell it where (the default should be your desktop). Then you can copy that and paste the info here in your post. We do ask that you post that in a spoiler tag, as it will make the post quite long. To do that you would do something like this :

CODE
[spoiler] Insert DirectX info here [/spoiler]

says I need to download a driver. Also that the Direct3D is unavailable or something of that nature so I suppose I'm gonna have to download a video card?

You need to determine what model your video card is and download the correct driver. You might want to go to the HP site and look under support for the pc you have. They should have a video driver for your machine and instructions on how to install it.

Try Here

There does not seem to be a video card in your specs at all and the machine is just using the standard vga.dll. Either you do not have a separate video card installed or the machine is not recognizing it for some reason. That is why your 3D is failing. It is possible that the default display is not compatible with your Myst game.

Click on Start - then Rightclick on My Computer and choose Properties. Choose the Hardware tab. Choose Device Manager. From the list available, choose Display Adapters and double click on it to expand (from + to -). If you have a card that has a problem it will have an ! next to it. If you don't have a separate card, this section will tell you exactly what your machine is using for graphics display. If you Rightclick on it and choose properties you can troubleshoot, uninstall, or update drivers from there.

If you are unsure how to do this exactly, let us know what information you find under Display Adapters, and maybe we can help you further from there.

Hope that helps.

I went to the device manager section but there's nothing containning display adapters. The only thing i can see for display is the video controller with a yellow question mark also saying VGA compatible.

WOOO!OOOO!OO!OO!OO!!OO!!O!OO!O When I tried to download that video driver the other night from that place, it downloaded but wouldnt show up on the dxdiag so idk what the problem was but since I redownloaded Windows XP, I tried again and now I got a video card. Did a rolling backflip and kicked over my lamp but it was worth it. Thanks everybody!!! thumbsup.gif (My GF is starting to get into the Myst story so she'll be excited)

Glad to hear you have gotten it working.

You may still want to look in the device manager and see just what kind of video adapter you have and download the newest driver for it. Windows itself just has a generic driver selection that does work, but the proper driver is usually much better.

If you still arent sure what driver to use, you could post just the display devices section of the DirectX diagnostics and we may be able to point you in the right direction.

I have another problem now. I'm tryin to play Myst 3 Exile and the book comes up as the main menu and when i click new game it asks to put in disk 2. I did and nothing happends. Over and over again reinserting it nothing happends. So I uninstalled it and Full install it. When I click on the new game button it asks for disk 1. Still got the same problem. After reinserting over and over it still sits there telling me to instert disk 1. I'm clueless at this point. Maybe someone has had this problem and there's just some kind of patch to download.

Sorry that this thread appeared to get closed. It was unintentional. A link from where the thread was originally posted was removed and that link closed. That caused the thread to be closed although it was not intentional. Now that I've caused enough trouble for one night and learned something new, I'm off to sleep.
