Guild of Greeters _ Spire - Sirrus' Age _ The Reverberation/chair Puzzle

Posted by: Ghaleon42420 Oct 13 2004, 08:36 PM

Alright...for those of you who remember, im the dense one that had trouble on the mangree puzzle in Haven....well....after eeking through the simple part of spire, im stuck on the 3 slider puzzle (ive already deduced the 4 combinations that produce the compatible sounds) but now what do i do.... headbang.gif headbang.gif headbang.gif headbang.gif headbang.gif

Posted by: G_ildor Oct 14 2004, 08:56 AM

There's still more work to be done. smile.gif You may have noticed that despice Sirrus's rambling descriptions the sounds made by the spider chair are distinctly unmusical...

Posted by: raiden Oct 14 2004, 03:45 PM

Can someone tell me where to find the rocks that go into those 4 displays? I have looked everywhere and I do not know where there aren't rocks there for the puzzle.

Posted by: Mysti Sage Oct 14 2004, 03:52 PM

Raiden, there should be rocks already in each of the four circular 'locks'. You should be able to zoom in on each to see them. If you're sure they aren't there, you have a bug, but I don't that's likely. Being a pre-rendered game, I wouldn't think it would be possible for them to just vanish. blink.gif

Posted by: raiden Oct 14 2004, 04:22 PM

Maybe so. Can someone send me a pic so I can see what it is supposed to look like?

Posted by: Mysti Sage Oct 14 2004, 04:26 PM

Sure, Raiden... I'll rev up Rev and be back with some pics ASAP. smile.gif

Don't worry if the boulders in the background aren't there... they won't be, for a while.

If by "you need to do something else" means tuning the device, ive already beat you to the punch. thumbsup.gif but NOW what...i assume it has to do with the 4 rock samples in the chair console.

Posted by: Mysti Sage Oct 14 2004, 06:18 PM

Ghaleon, there's something else for you to do, too. You can't shatter glass if you aren't on key...

Posted by: Moranda Oct 16 2004, 09:40 AM

Alrighty then. I can do everything that has been said. But still not complete the puzzle. H...E...L...P headbang.gif

That only happens if you aren't setting blue crystal to the correct frequency. If one of the sliders is one position above or below the correct one, as soon as you change to the next one it will stop vibrating. I think

Y'all are one step ahead of me. No matter what we do, my husband and I can't seem to get the crystals to rotate. We hear the noises going on, and we've turned the frequencies, but no movement whatsoever.. and we can't find the "holes" used to show us the order for the life of us.

Second of all, the gears at the lowest level... We have no idea if we're setting it right...

Click here to view a spoiler.

Lastly, it would seem the positions of the crystals may be changed from game to game... in the walkthrough, the order is: Left - Quartz and Rock; Right - Nara and Blue Crystal. But on our panel, the order is: Left - Quartz and Nara; Right - Rock and Blue Crystal. We figured we'd have to change the frequency combination accordingly, but it doesn't work..

Waaagh!!

Any help would be *greatly* appreciated.

Posted by: Mysti Sage Oct 16 2004, 05:39 PM

Qyonu, you have to remember that the very first position on the gears is 1, not 0. I made that very mistake. So to get 4 you would pull it down 3 clicks. You'll know if you have them set right, because the sounds that you hear in the chair will sound a lot better, and won't fluctuate as much.

As for the crystal positions... I don't know about that. I'll check later, though. Interesting.

Posted by: Qyonu Oct 16 2004, 09:08 PM

Yep, that did the trick. Yipeee!

We were able to do the rest of the puzzle smoothly from there...

Thanks, Mysti. thumbsup.gif

Posted by: coelho_buda Oct 17 2004, 04:48 AM

Yes, and if you read the walkthrough (if you are using mine, that is) with a little bit more attention, you'll see that all your doubts were explained there (including counting the first positions in the tuning gears as one)... rolleyes.gif although I need to make it more clearer that the white handle is to be used by you when you need to reset (it doesn't work automatically).

As for the lock orders, no they don't change from game to game. It's always like this: topmost left - Quartz, bottommost left - Rock, topmost right - Nara (knight chess piece) and bottommost right - Blue Crystal.

Just like I ask in the walthrough, when you find errors or inconsistencies please e-mail me so I can look them over and correct them.

Actually, they could. Revelation uses a hybrid pre-rendered/realtime engine. Every object and peice of scenery is pre-rendered, but they're assembled in realtime to create each panorama. That makes it a lot easier to animate things, like using seperate cells for the characters in a cartoon instead of repainting the background every frame.

I suppose my game decided to rebel... The Knight Chess Piece was on the lower left... no doubt about it. We checked it over and over. the Rock (big, rectangular piece, as shown on the Sirrus notes) was on the Top Right. I have no idea why... heh..

Don't feel bad, Qyonu. Everyone (especially me!!! laugh.gif ) makes mistakes. smile.gif

Posted by: Qyonu Oct 18 2004, 11:19 AM

... honestly, I saw the instructions say "Remember, the first position counts" or something like that, but I had no idea it meant "the first gear is a 1, not a 0". So I didn't end up seeing it as a direct instruction.

Though it seems obvious now that I know, at the time, "position" by itself was undefined, and did not mean "position of the gear before you move it" to me.

So, it was not a mistake at all.. it was just a miscommunication. of sorts.

This is a most frustrating puzzle and not in the spirit of the journey. If I wanted a game of speed and skill I would do Doom 3. This is supposed to be a game of solving puzzles. It has made me disgusted with the game. I do hope the patch comes out soon and either gives significantly more time, clears up the clutsy interface or preferably removes the time element altogether from this puzzle. ranting.gif

I wasn't offended Qyonu... it's just that I've had these kind of replies from a lot of people that end up not having a problem at all: they just didn't read the whole of the sentence/paragraph and ended up missing the why or the how of solving the puzzle in question. I receive a lot of e-mails daily with questions about the four games I wrote walkthroughs for. I get a little tense when I see that the person hasn't passed the puzzle because he/she didn't read the whole thing. Other than the speed thing, most of the people forget to tune the cables before starting this puzzle or tune them incorrectly because they didn't use the correct sequence. I've already solved this puzzle for four other people who have sent me their savegames and i can now do it very quickly.
But don't worry, rabbit.gif wasn't offended.

Grmbl.... just managed to finish this puzzle after a lot of tries, the walkthrough and built-in help. I found it extremely frustrating and even after solving it, I don't feel satisfied at all. Most of the "laws" described in the (imho very good) article http://www.justadventure.com/articles/PerfectAdventure/PerfectAdventure1.shtm are broken. I don't only think timing is too short, but I don't like timing AT ALL in adventure games. I don't think it does attract any people. But moreover, I don't find the explanations for the frequency settings logical at all.

I just hope the other riddles (Spire is the first world I visitted) are more logical and less guess-based, plus not time-dependent. As much as I like the athmosphere of the game, puzzles like these ruin it in my opinion....

I am having a really hard time here. I have set the gears at the lowest level (when you are having below everything and looking at three gears) I am pretty sure that I clicked only 3 times on the left, 2 times in the middle, and 6 times on the right. When I ascend to the level where you move the sliders, despite moving them to 12-12-12 (left-to-right), nothing seems to happen. Is this a speed thing or what am I missing? I have tried the other combinations for the rock, blue crystal, and quartz. HELP!!!!!!!!!!! confused1.gif ranting.gif

You are most of the way there to the solution... the problem is you have to input the frequencies in the correct order and in time so that the first one doesn't stop before you finish the next 3....

I fixed the graphics in the game (following Maztecs' advice) & went to do the chair puzzle.

I don't notice any difference in speed. Just as I'm starting to set the 3rd crystal I hear the dreaded "clink" in the background. And I'm doing them in the right order. headbang.gif Great, how am I gonna get past this? I'd rather sit perfectly still for 15 minutes. I can do that. I'm not a young Japanese boy.

As insane as the timed puzzle in Garrison was, I could still do it. I was able to do it after 3 or 4 tries (after big nudges). This chair...... yucky.gif No. I don't have the patience. Spire is so intense that I had to walkthrough a lot of it. So I'm not trying to achieve a perfect score here. I'm trying to....Continue. cool.gif Maybe some day I'll really try to tackle it, just to see the animation. (That animation better be dang spectacular. I mean....comon'!)

I know the "color wheel" from Art classes, so I could technically skip the dream world. But what I need is the Sirrus code for the Old Flower lock, which I heard is different with each new game.

QUOTE

Yeah, you're stuck here. It's changed each time for me, and I can't think of any way to get to it other than by beating it. It took me a bunch of times to get this... Now I can do it on demand. I memorized what each combo "looked like" instead of counting, and pull the sliders to match. If I try to count, I can't do it. It's tough, but you'll get it.

Good luck!

Posted by: Corona Nov 10 2004, 06:48 AM

Memorize the light settings?! shock.gif That's insane! There's 11 settings to memorize...in order. I need that brain space for more important things, like how to guide a spoon to my mouth, or being able to walk & chew gum at the same time.

Posted by: L'lee Nov 10 2004, 04:22 PM

Umm, Corona, there's only 9 settings to memorize, and only the sets of 3 need to be in order, not the individual movements within the set.... Plus, you know for the last one that they are "full on", so you don't really have to memorize that, right? So, that makes it only 6 settings that you have to memorize in order after the initial one. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but won't the initial setting stay vibrating as long as the sliders are in "that" position? If so, then you really don't have to memorize that setting, just set it and relax a second to gather your thoughts on the next two series. This should give you enough time to input the "changes" to all 3 sliders for the remaining codes. Give it a whirl from the perspective of The Little Engine That Could! It can't hurt to try one more time, right?

Posted by: Ja'de Nov 10 2004, 04:53 PM

I found that setting my mouse speed down in the options helped as well.

ah, sweet dear Corona, me thinks you are making work for yourself.

It took me a verrrrrrrrrry long time to solve that puzzle. I just kept at it doing the slider that took me the longest to set and working toward the shortest. And this was not the way rabbit said, though that way works for most. Funny thing is, when the puzzle finally worked, I was not expecting it. What a shock.

Try that . . .

BUT!

A saved game is not YOUR game.

The saved game may have data for things you may not yet have done . . .
or may NOT have the data for things you HAVE done!
And that's why it is no longer your game.

One of the guys that helps this way . . .
WILL use a saved game you send him . . .
but a saved game is indeed a last resort.

I don't know if this happens with anyone else but I never can reach the address http://goofedy.homestead.com that Tink use. The browser always report that "cannot connect to http://goofedy.homestead.com - using FireFox, or "server not found" - using IE. Why is that? Is it because I'm from South America or what? bash.gif

It connected ok but took a while to load.

Uruboo's second hyperlink to Tink's site is incorrect. It includes the trailing quotation mark. The first one works fine, but Cats is right, Tink's site loads slowly. So slowly at times that at first I thought it was down. http://forums.guildofgreeters.com/index.php?showtopic=8002&view=findpost&p=118490 Tink's explanation of why it behaves as it does.

Could a mod fix the hyperlink, please?

Ok if my links were wrong but that's not the point. The point is that I NEVER EVER could access Tink's stuff. I'm trying for weeks now and in different periods of the day. All I get is "server not found" or "cannot locate or connect 'put-link-here'". There must be an explanation for this. In her signature all I can see is "user posted image", for example.

Here is a tip for the slider puzzle. I spent days working the right sequence of numbers, but to no avail, the blue crystal always quit vibrating before I could complete the sequence. Then I did a very careful count and found out that I was one digit off in my entries. This error was due to the fact that the difference between a zero position and a one position on the sliders is very small and subtle. You can get the crystals buzzing if you are off by one notch on each slider, but they will not vibrate as long as they should and you run out of time. Once I discovered the slight difference between zero and one and adjusted my entries accordingly, I no longer felt like I was playing a Tomb Raider timed race. I had a small but sufficient amount of time to enter my sequences and the the door opened. thumbsup.gif

could someone tell me of anyone who could get me past this puzzle? Ive tried it alot of times, but nothing. any ideas? confused1.gif

Posted by: Trev Apr 17 2005, 04:16 PM

I got past the puzzle on the first try shock.gif , however I think it might have been due to a bug bleh.gif I entered two of the sequences, and then by accident, I clicked on the white crystal in the top left corner. I assumed that that added delay would mean that I wouldn't have time to finish it, however when I right-clicked out, the timer seemed to have reset, though the 2 I had done were still vibrating. So I did the last two, and voila, the bridge dropped.

How Tink did it . . .
is explained on the temp Spires Journal entry . . .
(the precursor to the re-appearance of the whole Spires Journal once the Tomahna Journal has been re-published).

It was done by staging the settings on the sliders . . .

And failing DaDungeon's tips I am pretty sure Rabbit hug_squeeze.gif aka coelho_buda does things like this
and can just get you passed the chair with your own sav game sent to him or something like that.
If you pm him and discuss the situation he can tell you whats what and what's not. smile.gif
I still haven't got passed it been trying for a few months now down.gif

If you're really, really desperate (and only if you're really, really desperate) send Ye Olde Save Gamme rabbit.gif 's way and I'll rustle up something in between writing the walkthrough for Myst V.

But only if you're really, really desperate... (hint: I'm easily bribbed with carrots, don't you know?)

Is there a different email like AOL or ?? that might be better to receive a sav. game? I sent a file to someone on a different website, and she thinks Yahoo might have trashed the file so it won't load. Shorah

Posted by: Shadowcats Sep 30 2005, 04:59 AM

All emails carry files up to a certain size restriction depending on what one you use and your isp ect.
Sorry don't work with Yahoo but trashed means it's classed as trash and placed in your Trash folder?
If it won't "load" sounds like it has been corrupted not trashed or am I not understanding you. unsure.gif
As the Myst4 save files are approx 5 mb each corruption could happen.
Try sending it again if not try an upload site like http://www.yousendit.com/ see if that works they take files Up to 1000MB (1GB) for free.
There are more places like yousendit.
Or sign up for http://mail.google.com/mail/help/about_whatsnew.html that has a generous size sending limit and also storage for you of 2,500 megabytes.

Posted by: coelho_buda Sep 30 2005, 05:52 AM

rabbit.gif has a GMail address, but from my experience it's better to use YouSendIt, due to the size of the savegames. These can be found inside your My Documents folder, under a folder named Myst IV savegames.

Each file will have a time tag with the date and time of the save. Find the one you want to send me and use YouSendIt. I'll pm you with my GMail address.

It looks as if everything has been said that can be said about this chair puzzle. I have been trying to solve this puzzle for about a year and a half. I would work for a while on the mangree puzzle and then for a while on the chair puzzle. Finally, about a week ago I got the mangree puzzle. JOY JOY Just whetted my appetite to see the rest of the game by opening the chair. But when this is done, there is no more. Woe is me!! I guess I will just keep plugging away and maybe someday I will solve it. P.S. I could not see anything with Tink's link but an error 404 page.

Kaym,

Help is on the way. We feel your frustration.

I have been working with Gameboomers' members for the past several years, helping them solve this puzzle. At this point I can solve it first-time, every-time having done it so often. So, if the following does not help you, please consider emailing your save-file from where you are stuck and I'll solve it for you and return the save at the point just after the crystals are "tuned", OK?

Common mistakes:

Click here to view/hide a spoiler.
1. GEARS BELOW: The gears below are often not set right. It's position 4, 3, 7 and note that the starting position is position #1, not position zero. So, to get to position 4, you pull the gear 3 clicks; for the next one, to get to position 3, you pull two clicks... got it?

2. SLIDERS: You need to understand that to get the crystals vibrating, you need only have the correct three slider settings for an instant, so when moving the third slider into place, just touch the setting for a moment and don't let go of the mouse click; instead move on to the next setting for that slider. Understand? This saves a lot of time. The mistake is releasing that third slider then having to grab and move it again.

3. When setting the slider notice that the slider tends to drop down to the position below where you want it (when you release it). So, always aim slightly above the position before releasing (for example, to get it to position 3, aim for about 3 1/2 before releasing and it will drop down on position 3).

4. Remember that there are 13 slider positions (0-12), so when you try to set it to position 1, don't drop all the way to the bottom; instead go one above the bottom to get position 1. Position 12 is all the way up.

Here is the quickest way to get through it:

Spider Chair Strategy:

The order of the settings: 6-12-4, 3-1-7, 10-5-5, 12-12-12.

Here is the step-by-step fastest order for tuning the Spider Chair Crystals

RIGHT SLIDER to 4.
LEFT SLIDER to 6. (Timed portion doesnít begin until you set the center slider.)
CENTER SLIDER to 12 up at the very top (donít let go) CENTER SLIDER to 1.
LEFT SLIDER to 3.
RIGHT SLIDER past 7 (donít let go), then down to 5.
CENTER SLIDER to 5 (center slider knob on a horizontal line with the right slider knob).
LEFT SLIDER TO 12 (go past 10 without stopping).
CENTER SLIDER TO 12.
RIGHT SLIDER TO 12.

Good luck,

Dadguy

Thanks to you all for replying. I haven't tried this solution yet, but it looks as if it should work. I will tell you if it does. I will join Urulive when I have something besides dial up for connection. I am not sure broadband is available in this area yet. We have DSL but doesn't Urulive require broadband? I really miss playing Uru.
Dadguy, wouldn't the dial up connection make it take a long time to send to you if I can't solve this on my own? Thank you so much for offering. Help is truly near. LOL

Uru Live can work on a DSL connection provided you have the minimum hardware.

And actually I was playing with broadband connection and only 556 kb of ram for almost 8 months and it worked.

Posted by: BobC Dec 21 2007, 06:59 PM

Hello Kaym,

It was always my understanding that DSL was one of several kinds of broadband. I've been using DSL for some time with no problems. We have even had up to three computers on-line at the same time using a router and it's worked very well.

Hello everyone,
The first time I tried to solve this puzzle with your solution all four of the crystals were vibrating! I watched for a second or two and nothing else happened so I pushed the blue button. Of course, then everything was set back to work the puzzle again. Was I supposed to wait longer? I have set the three gears several times. They must be right. Anyway, I saw the crystals vibrate. LOL

Posted by: dadguy Dec 22 2007, 10:07 PM

Hi Kaym,

If those crystals are visibly vibrating, you probably have the gears correct. Leave them for now.

The difficulty of the "timed" aspect of the puzzle is to get all four crystals vivrating at the same time. The four crystals have varying "sustain" to their vibration; that is why we do them in the order that we do. The crystal that vibrates for the longest time (6, 12, 4) we do first and the one that vibrates the shortest amount of time we hit last (12, 12, 12). But, one by one the vibrating crystals will stop vibrating, hence the need for speed!

My guess is that you might have gotten the last one just a tad late and the puzzle failed for that reason. It is truly hard to REALLY see that they are all vibrating at once (one is barely visible). So, just start again from the top and keep trying.... sounds like you are close. I know that those sliders are a bit hard to grab (and that you probably waste some time by accidentally grabbing the magnifier glasses a few times).

When you say that you have DSL, DSL IS a broadband option, and is quite adequate for URU (for most DSL speeds) and also for emailing Myst 4 saves (yes, they are BIG files). The Myst 4 files can be made smaller by going into the game and deleting some of the photos you have taken with the in-game camera. These make up MOST of the file size. With a lot of photos in-game, your save could be over 10 MBs. With zero photos, it is probably under 200 KB. Bid difference. After deleting photos, in-game, make sure you save the game again (it will be date and time stamped in Windows Explorer so you'll know which save is the most recent).

Let us know how you do. When you get it right, the chains will raise the bridge that you need.

Cheers,

Dadguy

Posted by: Kaym Dec 24 2007, 03:14 PM

Yesterday I solved this puzzle TWICE!! All four crystals were vibrating. Two rocks came up from the bottom and made a clanging sound and NOTHING ELSE HAPPENED. I think I know what is supposed to happen. At least I think the chair will open and let me go forward. That is what I picture is going to happen. I think my game is flawed!! I guess I will have to buy a new game if I want to see the end of this.

Posted by: dadguy Dec 24 2007, 03:53 PM

Nope, you solved it, Kaym! There is no flaw. Those rocks and the clanging sound (chains) were the bridge rising up before you! Now, just push the blue button (lower right on the console) to manually raise the console and walk across the bridge to the newly accessible area.

Congrats!

Dadguy

Posted by: Kaym Dec 24 2007, 07:07 PM

Now I really feel stupid. I had pushed the blue button before when I thought I had solved it and when nothing happened but a reset, I thought I wasn't supposed to push it. I am so glad that I will be able to see the end of this game!! My Christmas present. I hope you and your family are having a wonderful Christmas.

Hello Dadguy & everyone else,
I'm new to this forum and had been struggling headbang.gif with this puzzle for about 2 days. Then I did a google search and came across this site. I read your entry and I am still trying !!!! I actually got so frustrated I played past this point went back to Tomahna and then on to Serenia. Then ran into another snafu when I got to the marble puzzle and realized that I needed to finish Spire, blink.gif so I'm back on Spire again trying to solve this puzzle. verymad.gif I have been throwing around the idea of sending my save and having someone finish this puzzle but I am on a G4 Mac. Is there anyone on this forum that uses a Mac and might be able to help me.
Thanks,

Hi andreinert and WELCOME TO OUR FORUM! thumbsup.gif

I don't know if you're experiencing bugs. If you have technical issues please describe them, as well as your Mac system specs too. If all you need are just hints then perhaps http://www.guildofgreeters.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=41&Itemid=39 can help you.

Posted by: dadguy Jan 31 2008, 11:21 PM

We feel your pain, andreinert. smile.gif

The Mac saves and the Windows saves are interchangeable (at least they have been for a number of Mac users whom I've helped... I'll assume its the same for G4s), so if it comes to that, I'd be happy to receive your save file from where you are stuck, solve that puzzle, and return the save so you can continue with all of your game content intact. My email address is seen by clicking my name on the left of this message (use the yahoo address under "View Profile").

Good luck,

Dadguy
