Well I just got it for Chrissy - and the game won't install! down.gif

I note in the little booklet that some rewritable DVD drives cause some sort of conflict with their protection software.

So does this mean I can only play the game if I get a read-only DVD drive installed in my computer???

If so, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

ETA - apologies if needed - I have crossposted this at myst obession. I am desperate for a fix.

KismetKat:

Can you tell us a little bit more about the problem? What kind of error messages are you getting? Are you able to see the file contents of the CD through Explorer? Are you able to begin the installation but it stops? Etc..

Also, do you have two drives on your PC or just one? Telling us a bit more about the specific nature of the problem will allow us to help you more readily.

In the meantime, have a lovely holiday and post a bit more when you come back!

Shorah KismetKat,
I have had trouble in the past installing Myst things. down.gif Now I unplug from the internet, and shut down all antivirus, antispyware, firewalls, and the excess windows baggage in the system tray before I begin the install. Usually this resolves all da issues. blink.gif biggrin.gif

Just quicly before I go - we head out in about an hour.

No there is no error message. The disk is reading (and reading and reading and....) and nothing happens.

If I try to go thru explore I do not get as far as seeing any files on the DVD - I click on the icon for my disk drive and there it seems to freeze - with the little hourglass mouse icon - and does nothing.

In the booklet, at the very end of the System Requirements it says:- "Notice: This game contains technology intended to prevent copying that my conflict with some DVD-RW and virtual drives"

I have a rewritable drive so wondered if that was my problem. I only have the one dvd/cd drive. I know it can play dvd games because my son plays Battlefield 2 which is on DVD.

OH well, talk when I get back - the beach is calling smile.gif

You might want to do a quick search of the posts on that little "jewel" of anti-piracy software used in Ubisoft's releases of Myst IV and V.

If I remember correctly . . .
the warning referred to only a small number of specific brands of re-writable DVD drives.

I seem to remember them being discussed by brand name on one or more of the the MREDU forums' tech threads.

I have an HP dvd writer/cd-writer combo . . .
and other than some definite "reading of dual layering on some DVDs" issues . . .
the drive did well in transferring Myst-ian game data . . .
to Ye Olde Majicke Boxxe's hard drive.

Hmmm I can only suggest about Virtual drives software if you have one installed
It does play havoc with MystV.
Some links to try.

Kismetkat - I have this trouble now too with many of the new games - they won't install automatically, and I can't open Explorer to read them plus they freeze my computer.

The only work-around I have found is to shut down the computer while the disk is still in the DVD drive and start it up again - THEN I can install the disk, usually through Exploer, but sometimes the installer starts up on its own at restart....

If I remember correctly, I had the same problem with MYST V and I also just experienced it with the Sims game The Movies -

Try it at least before you try more complicated fixes...it might just do the trick.

Well the problem WAS my DVD drive - got onto ubi support who told me

QUOTE
This is an issue with the DVD drive not understanding our copy protection, so its between yourself, the DVD drive, and the makers of the DVD drive

Interestingly, they also said

QUOTE
So normally the makers of the DVD drive issue a firmware update, which teachs the unit how to read the latest copy protection.

I dowloaded some updated 'firmware' from the dvd people and am now playing the game! smile.gif

and I think MM may now have a couple of external walls up now. smile.gif
