Myst V installed without problems on my newly updates Vista system. When I try to run it though I get stack errors after hitting "play". The little cd icon is spinning and then.... stack error.

Did anyone experience the same error? Any ideas?

Thnx! bye2.gif

Loading it now to see if I can duplicate the problem... it was on my list of things to do today in any case. smile.gif

OK, I loaded it on Vista Business Edition without using Run as Adminstartor or using any compatibility mode settings. The only thing not stock Vista on my system is that I have User Account Control turned off because I find it extremely annoying. I'm listening to Escher bad-mouth Yeesha now for the first time and I'm about to go down the ladder into Descent.

All I can suggest is to make sure you've run all your Windows updates and make sure you have all the latest drivers for your hardware.

Hmmm, strange. I installed Vista last weekend and ran all updates and installed all drivers (last versions) before making a disc image. So I should be set. I even have SP1 installed. Do you have the most recent Java version installed too?

Actually, I never installed java at all. Apparently I am using the version that came on the Myst V CD. I had a glimmer of a thought that your stack dump might have been caused by java when I saw it mentioned during the install in one of the dialog boxes.

The version on the CD is sunjava... not sure what version... OK it's 1.3.1

I have not installed the beta SP1... I was waiting for the release version due mid-March, I believe.

edit: I loaded up sun java version 1.6.0 update 4 on top and Myst V still runs OK. Maybe the order of installation is important...

Another question if I may smile.gif

I unselected "Install DirectX 9c" during install, since Vista already has DX10. Did you do the same? And did you have display problems during install?

Grtz

Since letting Dx9 install doesn't hurt anything, I let it run. It will not overwrite any DX10 files. My display reverted to Vista Basic during the install so my sidebar began to malfunction but everything was back to normal after the install.

You can always find the DX9 install on the CD and run it separately if you think it might help. It's on CD 1 under support\directx9c. Just run dxsetup.exe

There is something you all should be aware of concerning Vista and Directx9.

Only the barebone needed DX9 files are installed to comply with "compatability" and aren't enough for for most games to run properly.

If you have any DX9 errors etc, you need to download the latest DX9.exe and install the whole works. This will not interfere with DX10 in any way.

This should take care of any errors. But might not help stack dumps!

Yup, that's why I let Dx9 install. This was only a problem back in the very early versions of DX when the older versions (2 and 3 IIRC) would over write the newer versions because it didn't check properly.

Like Marcello I have the same Stack error problem, unfortunately having tried repeatedly all your previous suggestions I can not get past the error. The really annoying thing is that a month ago it worked with no problems.
Then I got Myst 3 and 4 so uninstalled 5 to play in sequence. Now it will not work. Have no problems with Myst URU which seems to have the same spec as 5.
The Ubisoft support don't want to know because I have Vista.
I notice that with DX10 installed even when I run the required DX9, the program checker puts a red cross next to the DX9. Could this be the problem?
Any further suggestions would be really helpfully. confused1.gif

I got around the stack error problem with a Vista reinstall. Seems the service pack update did something. What I do not know. Still can now once again play EOA smile.gif

I've got about the same problem.
I've just got my laptop about a month ago. It's got vista, I think 64bit. I installed Myst 5 last night and I get a stack error when I try to start it. I tryed setting it to a XP compatability but then it just wont do any thing. I've installed DX9 and DX10.

Windows 7 has the same stack dump problem. It seems to install OK on Vista but doesn't like Vista SP1 or Win7.

I have not had time to try to troubleshoot this again. My DVD drive went bad and I just got the replacement drive today. I'm not taking any bets on how long the new drive will work... I have had the worst luck with DVD drives failing after a few weeks or months. The last one made it nearly two years shock.gif ! At least now I can test Myst IV on Win7. I have Vista Home Premium SP1 on my laptop so I'll see it I can get Myst V to install on that and let you know if I come up with anything. I only have the 32-bit version of Vista however. Some programs simply don't like 64-bit drivers.
