Alright, I have the old Riven (the one with the little cardboard sleeves) and am soon to have realMYST.

One problem: I have an XP machine...

Now, Riven still works on my laptop XP machine for some wierd reason, and I was wondering about compatabillity...

I've heard about a compatabillity mode in XP, I've heard of patches, I've heard of opening Media Player, I've heard all sorts of things. headbang.gif

I'd like to know:

1. How can I get Riven to work on my machine? (It doesn't right now)

2. realMYST is coming in the mail soon and I'd like to know beforehand how to get it to work.

Thank you headbang.gif

I don't know anything about RealMYST, but I can help you with Riven.

With Riven, you'll have to run the program in compatability mode. Find the game's .exe file and right-click. Select "Properties" and click on the compatablility tab. Select either Windows 95 or Windows 98/SE from the menu and close the properties box. Riven should work now. If not, try a reinstall and set it for compatability again. I don't think you should have trouble with disc changes, but if you do, let me know, I have program (somewhere here) that can help with that. Good luck!

RealMYST I can defiantly say will run the same as per Ken's instructions (compatibility mode)
I have XP and ran it ok.
Also Pyst ( a parody of Myst) runs the same after some tinkering with Compatibility.
Some links that maybe of help for patches and such.

Thanks! I got realMYST working right from the start. Riven semi-works, it has no sound and crashes after the intro movie plays. I'll either have to do some tweeking or just play it on my laptop.

Hi Hopeless Myster,

I had the same problem. Real Myst and Myst work fine on XP, but Riven doesn't at all. I get the initial movie and then no sound and the mouse doesn't work. The compatability didn't fix it and neither did several uninstall-reinstalls of Quicktime. I played it on my cheap-o laptop w/win98 just fine (go figure).

I didn't know about the patch, either. I may just try that. Thanks, Cats!

Have you tried the DVD? Does that work better, I wonder?

The RIVEN DVD works just fine on XP. I just installed it on my laptop to see how it does and it plays fine. There is another thread about this same problem and the recomendation is to purchase the DVD. I was able to purchase the MYST 10th Anniversary DVD Edition which contains the first three games second hand for about $10. This was about 6 months ago.

Hi all,

Just how on Rime did you get realMYST to run on XP? For me the installation went fine and I was able to play it immediatly after installation. But if I try to run it later to continue a game it crashes to the desktop without warning or error message. shock.gif I even tried to run it in 95 mode but no success. down.gif Plus the patch will not work. angry.gif If I want to run it again, I have to uninstall the game, delete the directory it was installed in and remove every trace of realMYST from the registry bank, than re-install it and play rightaway. yucky.gif

Anyone have any idea how to solve this problem?

Thank you in advance for any help you might bring.
