Guild of Greeters _ Artisans of D'ni _ Threads Of D'ni

Posted by: ghaelen Oct 31 2005, 02:31 PM

Well, our first quilting/sewing/needlework meeting went well, even for a small group. Budgie talked about her fantastic quilts, and we walked (and spawned) around the hood looking for design ideas in the architecture. With some creative thinking from GoldenWedge, we decided on a name: Threads of D'ni.

So, with that in mind, a new forum "thread" rolleyes.gif seemed to be in order. thumbsup.gif

The next Thread Gathering will be on Wednesday. Budgie and I will be there from 11am until ~noon? (I have a RL meeting), down.gif and Budgie will will be back to meet people who are coming at 1pm. Regular Wednesday gatherings will probably be at 1pm.

So, pull out that long lost sewing box/basket/tin and revive that years-old project! Or, just come to see what in the D'ni World we are doing in the hood! roll.gif biggrin.gif

Hello everyone!

Just a reminder that the Threads of D'ni will meet today in the GOG hood at 1pm CT. We may migrate to an age to view architectural patterns for projects, so if we're not in the hood, we'll be watching for you!

As usual, refreshments will be served.

bye2.gif Hi, Everyone...The Threads of D'ni sewing club, circle...um...whatever....met for over two hours yesterday. I did some applique on a small quilt depicting Direbo and Ghaelen worked on her cross-stitching. Today I finished a small 6 inch quilt for a special friend here at GoG. It depicts elements of both Kadish (the pink sky) and Kemo (water).

Click here to view a spoiler.

We'll be meeting again next Wednesday at 1pm, cst....usually at the Hood. Bring some sewing to do and fire up the teamspeak! Hope to see more of our sewing buddies there! thumbsup.gif

Posted by: L'lee Nov 10 2005, 10:05 PM

Hmmm, does crochetting count as "thread"?

Posted by: budgiemom Nov 11 2005, 12:27 PM

clapping.gif You betcha, L'lee !!!!

Posted by: Lia Nailo Nov 12 2005, 12:44 AM

That is really nice, I must say

Posted by: ghaelen Nov 12 2005, 01:02 PM

Wow, Budgie, that is BEAUTIFUL!

As far as what qualifies you to come to a meeting--first, your presence is actually enough! clapping.gif roll.gif

But, if you want to work on something and/or talk about it, anything is welcome that might, sort of, remotely, very nearly or even somewhat nearly involve needle and thread, or just thread, or (well, maybe not just needles.....), or images that could be rendered by needle and thread, or ideas about images that could be rendered by thread, yarn or anything thread-like.... you get the picture. photo.gif biggrin.gif

So come and have fun! thumbsup.gif roll.gif

Just a reminder that the Threads of D'ni will meet today at 3pm CT in the GOG hood on GOG. The topic is the season, and if you haven't seen Budgie's holiday quilt, you can see it http://forums.guildofgreeters.com/index.php?showtopic=9626. It is beautiful as always.

Refreshments will, of course, be served. Egg nog, mulled wine, cookies and candies. Glick.gif Come, whether you stitch or not! We'll be on GOG teamspeak as well.

See you then! bye2.gif yay.gif

bye2.gif Ghaelen has created the Threads of D'ni Hood for all of us who love the fabric arts. Meeting this Wednesday, 3pm cst Bring your sewing and if you can, teamspeak...believe me it's hard to type with that thimble on your finger! I'm going to be working on some Path of the Shell Light mini-quilts. I just finished two Myst quilts: This first one is of the palace window just off the plaza area. I included a little awning but added some decorative curlicues. And, yes, it is right-side up!!

I finished a blue Ferry light and added some "moss" or "mildew" or whatever...since it is next to water!!

Thread's of D'ni---sewing with your uru friends---in the T of D hood, 3pm cst, Wednesday thumbsup.gif

I finished the Hand Light: I think it got caught in a D'ni earthquake, cuz no matter what I did, it came out crooked. Oh well. I am going to be making some flowers and leaves and working on new designs. Ghaelen and I have taken pics of just about all the neat architecturual or molding designs in the hood.

Hand Light: the quilt is straight, but the light is wonkie!!! roll.gif

biggrin.gif This is my latest project. There comes a point where you just throw up your hands and say "enough" even tho you thought you had more planned. This is a study of fanciful/fantasy fungus. laugh.gif I plan to do more...but much smaller ones. This one is about 10 x 12 inches. I wanted round but i got another shape. Doesn't matter. I put flowers, leaves, vines, watery beads, mossy stuff, little buggy things, bug eggs, a spider, two webs and little growths of stuff. I was trying out all kinds of things. This quilt can be hung on the wall or laid on a table and viewed from all sides. I think I will set it on a raised object and just keep it on the table. The color in the pics is a bit dark.

This is a view of the whole thing, except the edges and the beady water isn't "flowing" off the fungus cuz it's in the scanner.

This is how I have been spending my time lately in front of the monitor. My keyboard is getting glittery with beads falling in among the keys and bits of thread sticking out here and there whistling.gif blush.gif I hope you like it.

Oooo! Great, Budgie! And the spider and bug eggs are a really cute touch. thumbsup.gif I half expect to catch a glimpse of a salamander peeking out from behind leaf... It just has that kind of "feel" to it. wink3.gif

biggrin.gif hello everyone! As soon as we get a new hood (Threads of D'ni) made on the D'mala shard we will be resuming our weekly sewing sessions. We may also do some Meeting Time rearranging too.

I also got recruited by the local quilt guild into teaching how to make my little tree mushroom thingys. I have been busy sewing and writing up the lesson directions, making samples, and supply list.

Below are pictures of two small mushrooms. They are roughly 8" x 8".

This past week I have been working on a Toldelmer mini-quilt. I needed a break from fungus and went out into space. This fabric is a batik with gold spots on one side. It is 8.5" x 13.5" and next time I will make a Smaller one, laugh.gif .

I don't think this photo make justice to all the wonderful quilts that are displayed on that wall shock.gif They are so vivid in color in real life!! And yes, I touched many of those too shock.gif (gently, Budgie smile.gif )

I'm not familiar with the oval one on the right and the one below it and above, (which looks like a Ferry railing). Also the once to the left and below the round quilts that were called Kadish's pools (if I remember). Something on the left corner too. So many new additions. clapping.gif

Posted by: budgiemom Mar 10 2006, 04:22 PM

blush.gif Ayli,
The huge Oval is a wall hanging from 2003--won 2nd place-challenge: The one underneath it kind of out of sight is 3rd Place challenge for 2005 (there is a picture of it in the gallery somewhere)
The rectangular one under the two Kadish circles is Dereebo v1. There is a closeup around here somewhere.
Over on the far left hand side are three (two little blue ones and one purpely square) --using Kadish Gallery line designs in them. These were tests to see if the lines were ok..I have all of the gallery done on the computer except for the huge wall windows--which I am not going to do anyway.

I have been working for the past few weeks on a 20 inche square wall-hanging of Kadish-View from the Temple. I was inspired by a pic sent to my KI by Amala-Sandra. She got a wonderful view of the Moon there. (I don't know if I can say this here; but this is also a commissioned piece and I am getting paid!!! for having so much fun--if you must you can delete this sentence, mods) My problem is always getting a good picture. This is a closeup of the flowers...well, I had to put flowers...but I also got in the strange colored leaves of Kadish too.

Click here to view/hide a spoiler.
This is an overall view; but I just couldn't get the color right in the camera. I used a cloth that matches the purple stone walls around the Kadish Vault. Then center shows that view from the temple with the moon, some tree branches, falling flowers and flowing vines and, of course, a spider, web and some fireflies too.

I have been anxiously awaiting a time that I would be able to join you all for Threads of D'ni. I have an opportunity on the 13th of this month. thumbsup.gif I would like to ask what exactly I need to do to meet you there. All I know how to do is go to the cavern from my relto in my UU game. Is the public neighborhood Bevin? I just want to get all technical issues resolved before then.

Thanks!

Once again, Beautiful!!!!!!

Posted by: budgiemom Sep 3 2006, 09:00 AM

bye2.gif Oh, Piran, I really hope you can make it. Directions: Just go to the Nexus (The round room with the rumbling revolving machinery) There is a nexus book in the neighborhood on a pedestal in the linking book room. If you have been to the city, you will find a Yellow nexus book on your relto bookshelf. Just choose Public Links.....you can sort by clicking either Name or Population and find Threads of D'ni. And then just link in. Looking forward to seeing you there..... thumbsup.gif

Budgie,

Is it ok that I added the Threads of D'ni meetings to the publicly visible calendar at this web site? If you'd rather it were not visible, let me know and I'll remove it.

If you decide to cancel a meeting you can let me know and I'll delete it from that week's events or we can add a sentence to the post that sends people to a specific place to see if the meeting will take place that week.

Cheers, Lial

I was able to follow all of your directions above. I do now have a yellow nexus book. I found the public neighborhoods. One question though, does the list of neighborhoods change from day to day? Threads of D'ni wasn't listed. Will it show up on Wednesdays?

Posted by: budgiemom Sep 5 2006, 11:58 AM

blush.gif ok...lets make sure we have our shards located....Threads of D'ni on the D'mala shard...I just went there and Threads is listed in the Public Links properly and should be listed there All the Time...hope this helps.

Posted by: kurtg1265 Sep 5 2006, 12:05 PM

If you click on the name header once it will sort the list alphabetically (A-Z). If you click that header again, it will sort he list backwards (Z-A). Same thing with the population header, first click will sort the most populated hoods first, 2nd will have the least populated hoods first. (this is easiest if just looking for the most populated hood) If you use the name option, you may have to scroll down through the list to find the hood that you want.

Posted by: Lial Sep 5 2006, 12:36 PM

And now these meetings are listed on our web site's calendar and visible whether or not you log on.

bye2.gif Just a Reminder: Threads of D'ni--tomorrow...see Lial's wonderful Calendar!

Last night I finished a little project that I have been working on for just a few days. These are Five little postcard quilts---just 4 inches by 6 inches including the binding. These are going off to the FFAC--Fabricarts For A Cause. Quilters send in little quilts which are then sold for a set price with all money going to the American Cancer Society. This little group will be part of others going to the Houston Quilt Festival, put on display there and sold (and voted on... smile.gif ). They are really all straight...but they wiggle around so on the scanner. I tried to get the colors close but as usual...anyway here they are:

Oh, Budgie! The struts are fabulous! For the record, I said "just tack them on the back and I will know they are there". But she couldn't just tack them on the back, could she? No, she couldn't. And the Vault stitched in gold thread...wow...

That must be the most beautiful back of a quilt ever. And the whole piece has become a perfect metaphor for Kadish itself - it has a hidden secret - what is not seen....stunning work.

The little quilts for charity are exquisite too, Budgie. What a lovely, precious tribute to your mother-in-law.

Well here it is, Thursday... shy.gif I missed threads of d'ni yesterday. cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif I never dreamed that I would forget. I had it written on my calender and everything. This wedding has become all consuming and the work I was doing for it yesterday did just that. I am so sad!!! I don't know when the next time is that I will be able to come. Here's the ironic part. My mother was beading leaves onto my veil yesterday!

Well I will continue to be on line in the city and the cavern and talking to all of you wonder-full people here. I'll post a picture or two of the wedding when we return from the honeymoon.

Again, I am so sorry I didn't make it.

Thanks for all the pictures of your work. I thoroughly enjoy them!!!

bye2.gif Hi, ya'all...Well, I have been busy experimenting..this is called 3D Tree Experiment V1. It all started with those freeform pieces of mushrooms and water scenes. I wanted them to be viewed from all directions and got the idea of putting them on a miniature "tree stump". This piece of wood comes form one of hubby's aquarium friends, aka Swampy, who makes wonderful artistic wood pieces from recovered cyprus etc. from the swamps of Mississippi. The wood and quilts only measure about 7.5 to 8 inches in height and that includes the base it's mounted on. There are 3 quilts--The water, the mushroom, and a leaf. I used no glue or adhesives of any kind---it's all thread, cloth, and beads. Some things to remember when viewing: a. This is an experiment to see if I could actually get some quilts onto a piece of wood., b. The camera is not my friend , c. I think I need a bigger piece of wood.

Me thinks the time on D'mala is growing short, for everyone, not just Threads of D'ni---which will be moving to Live!!!!---whenever that is possible!

In the meantime, don't forget---Threads of D'ni get-together for all hobbiests and artists no matter what genre is at Threads of D'ni Hood---Public Links---from 1-3 pm central time---Every Wednesday!!!

The sample below is a more traditional small quilt and really has few if any "Myst"ical qualities. It is a traditional block called Chariot Wheel. I used machine and hand quilting; embroidery, 3D flowers and leaves, and various "fibers" for vines; plus Beads!!! And it is Straight---don't know why I hang stuff up wonky.

Piran,

Teamspeak is a free utility that you run in the background while you also run Uru. You can get it at this web site: http://www.goteamspeak.com/index.php?page=downloads. Choose the Teamspeak2 client for Windows or use the download now button in the upper right of the window.

Teamspeak's pretty easy to use. Typically users log on using their avvie name and you don't need a password so leave that field empty. Someone at the meeting will be able to tell you the server and channel names if they don't chime in here first.

Often in the evening (EST) one or more explorers broadcasts music over Teamspeak. On those occasions the most frequently used server is gtchat.hopto.org. If you're just listening it's wise to activate the mute microphone option.

Cheers, Lial

On ts, you can fiddle with settings for either hands free or Push to talk. Be sure to choose a different Key other than Tab for the Push to talk key. If hands free, be cautioned we will hear Everything!! but then we can chat and sew.

Posted by: budgiemom Nov 21 2006, 08:53 AM

Once you type the url into teamspeak and Piran into nickname you will connect to the guild of greeters ts server. You don't have to type anything else. You will see a list of channels. We will be using the greeter one. You will see names listed there..just click on the channel name and you will be there too!!!

I always wondered what the group did, being a cross-stitcher and very occasional quilter myself. It sounds lovely. Is Threads of D'Ni running on UL at present or D'Mala and what cavern time. It has to mesh with Australian time (oh dear) for me to have any hope of attending, but if it's at all possible and you're taking new members, I'd love to know. Doing embroidery on D'Ni themes or motifs would be just charming gifts for Myst-mad friends. smile.gif

Last week Threads of D'ni was public. Let's hope the same for tomorrow! Wednesday, 1-3pm, Threads of D'ni Bevin

In honor of Delin, I am posting this (I think I put it up before with no comment). I love the leaves that fall on you and there is a pesky fern to get into your way!!! It's only a 5 or 6 inches square and the scanner lit it up too much.

Think I will do another one in a while...I just love the colors there.....Hope you like it!

Budgie, that is beautiful, as always. I will try very hard to come today if I can get home from campus in time. /wave

laugh.gif Meeting Today.....Threads will be at Threads of D'ni Bevin...1-3 pm CST.

Here is a pic of the very First 3D thing I ever made! It was done some years ago and the pattern is not mine. Our little quilting bee at the time was sharing stuff and someone shared this pattern and we all made this lady. It's an angel ornament for the Christmas tree. But as usual I changed things. I didn't use Christmas fabrics and turned her into a kind of Firelady. The wings where done on water-soluable film with the wings pattern sewn over it; then the film washed away. I used leftover wing stuff to make a kind of crown and vest. I made her before I discovered URU; but now she reminds of the Spirit ladies in Myst IV. Hope you like her....wish I knew where she originally came from....

bye2.gif It's been a while---just too busy---Just finished a small sample to test some ideas for Minkata. That's all this is..a test of some ideas and techniques. It is 4.75 by 7 inches. This front view is kind of an aerial view of Minkata. Brown beads are those brown stoney things. Some beads represent the holes and bones lying around. A button represents the cage. I used a see-thru material and trims to represent the wind and dust. Some faint trails or wind direction marks are on the surface.

Click here to view/hide a spoiler.

This is the back or night view of Minkata. I had a scrap of material with the nexus in gold thread already embroidered so I used that to represent the night sky, compass, directions, etc. and put in some beads for stars. The top part is the little sleeve and there is a blank space at the bottom for a label.

Beautiful work, Budgie, as always! It's funny, I had just been wondering if you were still creating new ones, as we hadn't seen any posted in awhile. I'm glad to see that you still have that wonderful creativity going out there in the "real world"!

whistling.gif OK, this one is a bit silly. It is called an Incher (I got the idea from an article in Quilting Arts Magazine. This one is only 1.25 inches square and meets all the definitions of a quilt. This one has 4 layers with one being a stiff piece of pellon so that it won't get squished. I really made it as an embellishment to go onto another small quilt (not finished); and I wanted you to see it before it is used. It is also reversible. Front view

bye2.gif Hi, y'all; here is something I have been working on for a long time. It was supposed to be finished in March; but I put it away for awhile and just finished it yesterday. It's called Ages of Myst and Uru and it's like a crazy patchwork quilt of Myst ages or suggestions of ages. It is 12 inches square and I concentrated on doing embroidery and beadwork. See if you can find all the Ages; the frog, the quabs, the fireflies, eagles, and footprints. There is more besides those things. Also the sleeve on the back suggests something too:

I think I can make out the Cleft, Gira and Kemo, Possibly Minkata... thumbsup.gif

whistling.gif OK, this kinda got buried, but here are most of the ages represented: Gira, cleft, minkata-day, minkata-night, todelmer (the part with the stars), great tree-sorta, kadish, ahnonay, and two others on the front with relto on the back.

whistling.gif This is the latest "completed" work. Took forever, cuz I put it under stuff..oh well...The gate is a digitized version of the gate behind the big DRC tent on the Ae'gura plaza, that leads into the DRC building. I also apologize for the pics; the flash makes parts too bright. It's really dark with the gate a golden glittery thing buried in foliage. It's called "In the Forest There is a Gate"; it's 11.75 " wide by 18.5" long. I made it too long..should have cut off the top and bottom some. Anyway...the first pic is the whole thing and then closer views of the top and bottom.

Since I can't finish Lord Chaos's Donation Winner Quilt by Christmas, thought I would post a little update/tease here for him and everyone. LC wanted the Light Garden, Dancers, Eder Kemo Pond, and lots and lots of froo-froo...(my word for embellishments galore)...soooo, here is a teensy pic of some very curious stones. I am only just finishing up the first layer of embellishment so there are no beads shock.gif yet!

bye2.gif I'm glad you took a pic of the whole quilt...I forgot...only have closeups. The quilt is titled Uru Dancing. Soooooo, here are three of them:
This one is of the kemo stones and pond...I put in a frog or turtle or whatever you want to see there.

This one is all the flowers on the left-hand side. Leaves have reflect bits either of light or of the water. There are a few little bugs and water drops also.

This one is of the pair of dancers. I got a pic of a couple dancing and used them as a silohuette in a distinctive Uru dance pose. The fabric is a shiny material reflecting the crystals and lights in the Light Garden. Also these dancers and a pic of the kemo pond are combined in a label in the back with quilting and flowers.

bye2.gif Hi,y'all. Well, this little quilt is a bit different, indeed. It started out an orange/purple perhaps Uru quilt but as I worked on it--it morphed. It seems to be an ancient primordial sea, full of floaty animals and filter feeders. Sun shining through a not quite clear sea is orangey and a small purple area seems to be a different view---a swimmy thing and plankton, perhaps at night. It is a 12 inch square. Whatever it is, it was fun!

So very beautiful budgie!!

Posted by: Robyn Feb 10 2008, 08:48 PM

"Receding Tide at Sunset", or "Receding Sunset Tide" perhaps?

It reminds me of walking at the edge of the ocean as the tide is going out, leaving fresh and alive tidal pools behind, and the bubbles, foam and bits and pieces left behind as each set of waves comes come up the sand not quite as far as the last ones... The last glow of the sunset reflected on the water, but dark on the sand or where the shadows lie...

Alright, that's a memory from last year in Maine, but this piece brought those images back to me very clearly, and as if it compressed several minutes of walking and looking into one picture!

This hits a much deeper, emotional level for me than a picture of distinct and recognizable objects. The single shell directs the mind to the sea, and it builds on that foundation with everything else contained within the quilt.

You may not have known where you were going when you started this, but I think you've arrived with another winner!

Excellent! clapping.gif

Posted by: budgiemom Feb 15 2008, 11:52 AM

bye2.gif Thank you,Robyn for those wonderful words, believe me, every "artist" longs to hear how something that they made touched someone else!
Well, you know how when you are trying to learn something new, it turns out just the opposite but maybe just a bit better than you expected? I saw a technique in a magazine for adding a facing to a quilt that would eliminate the need for a binging and you could make the edges follow any contour that you wanted..Cool!!! I thought the pictures looked fabulous and so I decide to make two trial pieces to learn the technique.
OK, so I didn't read the really, really fine print on the pic that I liked and when I made the first little piece, I got the facing on backwards, but I liked the edges and I didn't want to rip it off and waste material, even if it is only 5.5 inches. So I beaded the back--now front--side, which is really the back anyway. I call it Sea Bits #1

Click here to view/hide a spoiler.

Sooo, I tried again (I had by this time read the really, really fine print) and knew where I had gone wrong---but I messed up again!!! The cloth I wanted on the front turned up on the back.. lmao.gif so, I made a separate quilt sandwich---got it all quilted and beaded, etc. and stuck it into the messed up piece. The material I wanted to sew on is still on the back---but nice and pristine, the little quilt on the front has really neat borders. I haven't sewn anything on the border part, but I probably will on the next one. I have found a technique, changed it a bit to suit me and found something else that I find very satisfying to work on.....Hope you like, Sea Bits #2 (over all size about 6 to 7 inches)---Just for you, Robyn!!!

bye2.gif Hi, y'all! Sorry, I've forgotten how to put the pic into a spoiler!!!
I've been sewing lately. A quilt friend gave me a homemade sewing basket, cloth, some notions, and a pattern for a 3D quilt project called Elf House. I added my own embroidery and beads. I am giving this to my friend. I didn't have access to a camera...sigh...but I got one scanned image. The house has four sides with a door and 2 windows. It hangs by a rope of vines and leaves. I hope you can see it clearly enough. Enjoy!

worship.gif Hey, J'iim, thanks! You are the best. Let's see if I can get it to work properly now.

I have been working on ocean themed little quilts lately. This one is called Sea Waves. I wanted something that remined me of wave action and all the little sea stuff that floats around and goes back and forth in the waves. The green filmy stuff is hand-dyed (not by me)raw silk. It is left overs from the cocoons of silk worms and is sooooo soft.

Yay! yay.gif it worked!

blush.gif I wish to apologize for moving some pictures and thus breaking links to some posts here. So I thought I would update those here. The first was a "filter feeder" that was quite large---Feb.10,2008. Rather than put that back up...here is a smaller quilt inspired by that quilt. It's called Filter Feeder"

The next ones that were dropped were two little freeform, two tone quilts from Feb. 15, 2008.
The first is Sea Floor:

This a better view of the second one titled On the Beach

And just to finish this up, here is a 3D quilt...it can lay on a table or hang on a wall. I sort of went all out embellishment-wise. It depicts all the sea/ocean flotsam that gets washed up onto a beach or in a small tidal pool.

But, you do have an alternative if you're worried about taking up too much space. You could post them on your website, and provide links here to the appropriate pages. That would also let folks that don't already have your site http://www.amazonmoosey.com/SemperCulcitat.htm take a look at even more of your art. wink3.gif
